Vesitys (2024) Video installation by Henrietta Soininen & Usva Torkki was exhibited in Muutos.art-taidetalo in Tampere during the summer 2024 before the building was demolished.
Vesitys is a media artwork that invites you to reflect on the relationship between climate change, water systems and beauty.
The installation creates the illusion of being underwater. You can lie down in the middle of the curtains and stay as long as you want.
The installation asks, can an environmental disaster look beautiful? How could you talk about it in a way that makes people slow down and listen?
The work combines an artistic and environmental journalistic approach. In a time of science denialism, art has the opportunity to strengthen the position of science and make the climate change debate more approachable.
The video material seen in the installation was filmed in the lakes of Tampere during the spring of 2024. The sentences heard on the soundtrack have been excerpted from journalistic publications from the past year, read by author Pirkko Soininen.
